We are looking to appoint a Sociological Review Fellow to start on 1st September 2021 with the primary aim of completing a substantial writing project, normally a monograph based on a successfully completed PhD.
Sociology at Keele is located in the School of Social Political and Global Studies all members of the school are also members of the Keele Institute for Social Inclusion (KISI, https://www.keele.ac.uk/socialinclusion/) which focuses upon the interdisciplinary study of social, cultural, and civic resilience; intersectional vulnerabilities and social mobilities; political mobilisations and advocacy. Sociologists within the School also specialise in the areas of social theory; migration, race and ethnicity; crime and policing; sociology of education and youth; cultural sociology; digital sociology; social inequalities; urbanism; globalisation; parenting/care; consumption and material culture.
Apart from completing a substantial writing project, the successful candidate would also be expected to liaise with, and provide support to the Editorial Office of the Sociological Review.
The successful candidate will receive a mentoring package (at Keele and at the Sociological Review) with a strong emphasis on early career development and a generous allowance of up to £1,500 will be made available for conference and fieldwork. At Keele, Fellows will benefit from the University’s research environment, including access to the 200+ Keele membership of the Institute for Social Inclusion, which will provide opportunities to engage in joint writing projects and / or collaborative funding applications with established members of Faculty and wider University. In addition to support received at Keele, you will also be granted access to 'The Foundations of British Sociology: The Sociological Review Archive’; you will be encouraged to use this resource if appropriate.
The post is funded by the Sociological Review Foundation as part of its ongoing commitment to Early Career Researchers. The purpose of the Fellowship is to provide early career academics with the opportunity of spending a year writing their first monograph length book. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate their excellent, rigorous and innovative research ability, and evidence their competence to carry out the project in a timely manner. Good interpersonal skills are also essential. Your PhD must have been awarded in sociology, social anthropology or a cognate discipline within the last 24 months (i.e., applicants whose PhDs have not yet been awarded at the point of application are ineligible and applicants whose PhDs were awarded in excess of 24 months are also ineligible). Furthermore, you will not have previously been in receipt of a postdoctoral research fellowship.
We are looking to appoint a candidate who can evidence their ability to write for publication. As such applicants should have at least one piece of work from their PhD accepted for publication (e.g., a journal article or book chapter).
In the letter of application applicants are required to include: (1) the award date for their PhD (your PhD must have been awarded within 24 months of the application deadline date – please do not apply if your PhD was awarded before April 2019), (2) whether you have previously been in receipt of a postdoctoral Fellowship. In addition, Letters of application must clearly outline the scope of this writing project, its importance, and relevance. This letter of application should include a full writing plan and timeline, and also potential venues for publication and related conference presentations during the fellowship. If available a draft book proposal should be included, with an indication of potential publishers or evidence of the book contract you have already been awarded by a publisher. Finally, please submit a full CV with your application.
